This collection was inspired by a story withdraw from Evocative Objects, things we think with, a book edited by Sherry Turkle. The story title is The Suitcase by Olivia Daste. Basically the story illustrates on how essential the suitcase meant to the aurthor because it was from her late grandmother. It is a container of her great and intimate memories.
In reflection, I wanted to create something that allows children to collect and store physical objects that represents something significant to them. Personally I have a habit of gathering intersting items I find on the streets anywhere, and keeping them in my pockets. However, sometimes I forget taking them out before going to the laundry. (I belive many children experience the same ) Therefore, designing tearable pockets became my top design goal.
What I meant by tearable is that each pockets are stitched with a velcro, to stick onto children clothing. If the clothing material are not stickable (such as polyster or raincoats), a designed belt will go along with the pockets. The belt is adjustable and has the opposite side of the velcro stitched on.
Research were done for better understanding the needs of children between 5~8 age range. Reasearch states some positive abilities children can acquire through the collecting process, including the awareness of personal responsibility, organizing, mathematical and financial knowledge.
FORM FOLLOW FUNCTION was a crucial rule I kept for myself through the process. You can see it from each pockets how I tried to cope the appearance with its purpose.
Sketches and first-hand observation were done.
